Proposing a new course
Procedures and guidelines for proposing new courses may be found under the
Proposing a Course section.
Proposal Deadlines
-
Chicago Quarter (Discover & Explore Chicago):
December 15
A course proposed by 12/15/2024 may first be taught, following approval, in Autumn
2025.
-
Focal Point Seminar:
February 1, May 1, October 1
A new course proposal needs to be submitted at least two quarters before the first term an instructor plans to teach it. Thus, if you would like to teach the course in winter quarter, propose it by the prior spring deadline (May 1); if you would like to teach it in spring quarter, propose it by the prior fall deadline (October 1). No Focal Point Seminars are scheduled in autumn quarter.
Scheduling a course (approved or proposed)
Faculty who wish to teach a course, whether pre-existing or proposed, should be sure to contact their department chairs or program directors no later than early January and request that their courses be included provisionally on the department or program's slate of courses that is submitted to the First-Year Program in late January.
Note: Typically, Discover Chicago courses begin with Immersion week, the week
before Autumn Quarter officially begins. In 2025, Discover courses will begin on Tuesday, September 2nd and end on Monday September 8th. Explore courses will begin on the first day of the Autumn Quarter, Wednesday, September 10th, 2025.
Department chairs and program directors typically solicit faculty interest in FYP teaching by the end of Autumn Quarter. FYP representatives will happily accept invitations from department chairs to attend department meetings to discuss teaching opportunities in the First-Year Program.
Staff who are interested in serving as Chicago Quarter staff professionals should contact the
Office of New Student & Family Engagement,
