DePaul University invites applications for an Urban-Focused Ecologist to begin in autumn 2022. This tenure-track Assistant Professor would join DePaul’s thriving Environmental Science and Studies (ENV) department (https://env.depaul.edu).
We invite applicants whose research is in urban-focused ecology, although we are open to interdisciplinary teacher-scholars whose background or specialty might include social-ecological systems/coupled human-natural systems, landscape ecology, restoration ecology, or the study of ecosystem processes modified by urban development.
The successful candidate would teach 6 courses per year (each lecture period counts for 1 course and each lab section for 0.5 course), typically 2 courses per each of three academic quarters (Sept-June) with about 5 weeks of winter break. The 10-week quarter system provides curricular flexibility and makes course delivery more nimble. ENV courses taught would depend on the new faculty member’s expertise and interest, but would include topics related to data analysis and statistics. This tenure-track position is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a commitment to undergraduate education. Additionally, community partnerships can be developed using Chicago as a classroom for social justice and equity-based research. We have long-standing collaborations in teaching and research with The Field Museum, the Morton Arboretum, and the Urban Wildlife Institute at the Lincoln Park Zoo.
The successful candidate will have a strong record of teaching and scholarship. Most of all, the successful candidate will be committed to helping a diverse population of students to succeed in undergraduate research and course learning, regardless of gender, ethnicity, and STEM preparation. The candidate would also advise graduate students in our M.S. program.
About the Department, College, and University:
The ENV department currently serves over 120 undergraduate students in two majors: Environmental Science (B.S.) and Environmental Studies (B.A.). The department also offers a M.S. in Environmental Science that serves approximately 25 students. ENV has seven full-time faculty, a department administrator and a laboratorian. ENV faculty are actively engaged in research and teach a diverse student population.
Although our ENV department prides itself on its small-community feel, the College of Science and Health (CSH) and DePaul University offer big-university resources and amenities. CSH houses 10 departments in ENV-related disciplines such as Biology, Chemistry, and Health Sciences, with nearly 2,400 undergraduate students and 900 graduate students in 20 master’s and doctoral programs.
